The Metrodome in Minneapolis is not getting knocked down for another nine months or so, but folks already are submitting requests to walk away with various pieces of it.
The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority has received more than a dozen requests so far, mostly for seats.
The school district in Doland, S.D. -- where Dome namesake Hubert Humphrey grew up -- has asked for something, such as a seat or sign, as a memento. Humphrey was the former Minneapolis mayor who went on to serve as U.S. vice president.
The Chanhassen Baseball Association wants the turf and batting cages, and 100 seats have been requested for Staples Motley Community Education in Staples, Minn.
Tuffy's Stadium in Perham -- home of the Perham Pirates baseball team -- wants seats for a special section in their ballpark.
An authority spokeswoman said officials haven't yet decided how to handle the requests.
The Metrodome opened in 1982 and for decades was the center of Minnesota sports history -- hosting football games of the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Vikings, as well as baseball's Minnesota Twins and a number of amateur games. For a while, it even hosted Minnesota Timberwolves basketball.
The 31-year-old stadium is being demolished to make way for a new, $975 million stadium for the Vikings, which is going up on roughly the same site in downtown Minneapolis.
