Why Does a Rhino Horn Cost $300000? Because Vietnam Thinks It Cures ... - The Atlantic

A rhino-head heist spree is sweeping the world and destroying rhino populations, mostly because of some ridiculous myths Reuters It was in most respects a typical heist that happened in Dublin last month. Masked men, roughed-up security guards, $650,000 in stolen booty. But this wasn't art or jewelry that was stolen. The contraband, instead, wasfour rhinoceros heads. Or, more specifically, their horns. And this wasn't the first time. Arhino-head heist spree swept Europe in 2011, as thieves raided museums and auctions houses in seven countries, prompting 30investigations by Europol, 20 of which are ongoing. Similar heists have also been on the rise in Africa, as well as in the odd American backwater town. Meanwhile, an online business thrives as well--including one dealer on Facebook who only accepts bitcoin. What is driving this "highly organized" crime ring? If you guessed "China," you were wrong. The answer is Vietnam. The country's appeti...

Communist Vietnam -- Human Trafficker Extraordinaire - American Thinker

Vietnam is now the proud possessor of the inglorious title "The Worst Human Rights Violator in Southeast Asia," according to recent testimony before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. State-affiliated labor export companies are major suppliers of men, women, and children to the forced labor and sex trafficking markets, while government officials profit from kickbacks. Statistics on Vietnam's human trafficking range widely; though accurate information about this communist country is hard to find. Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security offers an official figure of 2,935 Vietnamese who were subjected to human trafficking between 2004 and 2009. However, international organizations report a far larger number; more than 400,000 victims since 1990. Even this covers only those reported as victims, omitting untold tens of thousands of abuses that go unnoticed, especially in the labor force. Exporting workers is nothing new for Vietnam. After the 1975 communist ta...

Top brass back Vietnam medics - The Australian

TWO of Australia's most senior military commanders have spoken out in support of civilian medical team members who served in Vietnam but are denied government assistance for war-related health problems. General Peter Cosgrove, the former chief of Australian defence forces, served in Vietnam. He said he had no doubt the volunteer teams of doctors, anaesthetists and nurses who worked in the Vietnam battle zones between 1964 and 1972 were under the control of the military.
